Why is JAM cut off required?

The IIT administered Joint Admission Test for M.Sc programmes (JAM) attract thousands of applications every year against a limited number of seats, i.e., as many as 1775 across 15 colleges offering postgraduate science programmes. Further, many of the JAM applicants are screened out with the entrance examination. Yet, the number of test takers qualifying the M.Sc entrance examination is quite huge in comparison to the number of offered seats. Therefore, JAM cut off is determined to shortlist candidates for admissions into the M.Sc programmes and it becomes easy for the institutes to call the JAM cutoff qualifying candidates for counselling process.
